Suche: DevOps Engineer & Systemadministrator*in (d/f/m): Infrastructure as Code & Betriebsverantwortung

english version below

  • Ausblick: Wir evaluieren derzeit Kubernetes.

Was Du mitbringst

Voraussetzungen

  • Sehr gutes Englisch (Arbeitssprache), Deutsch mind. B2.

Was Dich erwartet

  • Faire Vergütung (55 – 75 TEUR p.a.)

DevOps Engineer & System Administrator (d/f/m): Infrastructure as Code & Operational Ownership

We are looking for you

We are looking for someone with solid expertise in Linux systems, automation and operations, with an eye for detail and the mindset of treating infrastructure as software. You make sure our platform bill.bo and related software runs in a stable, secure and traceable way, and you give the development team a reliable foundation to ship independently. And you don’t stop at the container boundary: you also look into our applications, deploy them and debug them when things go wrong in production.

Who we are

At binary butterfly, our developer hearts beat for complex data applications related to (e-)mobility and payment. We promote environmentally friendly mobility, open data, and standards in a sustainable way – with start-up energy, a clear attitude and shared responsibility.

We develop and operate bill.bo together with GLS Mobility GmbH. Our principle: One product. One team. One shared responsibility for the product’s success. We organize product development, engineering and operations around clear product ownership – from the initial idea through development and release to operations and continuous improvement.

We are professionalizing our structures and working together to refine a lean role structure. Our team is neurodiverse and interdisciplinary. We value people who see diversity as a strength, take ownership and shape change constructively.

Our engineering approach

We run our infrastructure with the same care we put into developing software: versioned, reviewed, tested and documented. We set up systems reproducibly as code; changes are traceable and verified before they go into production. We don’t draw a hard line between operations and development. We see quality as a shared responsibility – in the domain, in the technology and in our processes.

Our infrastructure

  • Our own root servers running Debian and Ubuntu, set up reproducibly with our own versioned Ansible collections – including hardening, nftables, fail2ban, Borg backups and VPN (WireGuard, OpenVPN, IPSec)
  • Docker & Docker Compose behind Traefik, deployments via GitLab CI/CD to separate staging and production environments
  • MariaDB, Redis and RabbitMQ as core services, observability with Prometheus, Grafana, Loki and Sentry
  • The applications behind it: Python backends with Flask and Celery, React frontends and Kotlin on credit card terminals
  • Outlook: we are currently evaluating Kubernetes. Nothing has been decided yet – you will actively shape the assessment and a possible migration.

You don’t need to know all of these technologies already. They give you an idea of what you’ll be working with here and what you can learn.

Your role

As DevOps Engineer & System Administrator, you are responsible for the stable and secure operation of our platform. You evolve our Ansible collections, roles and playbooks, look after servers and infrastructure services, and are the central contact for everything related to operations, deployment and monitoring. You think of infrastructure as a product: maintainable, reusable and built so the team can work with it well.

For us, DevOps explicitly means staying close to the applications: you know the applications running on our infrastructure, deploy them independently, read logs, traces and code when errors occur, and work with the dev team to figure out whether a problem lies in the infrastructure, the configuration or the application itself.

You will work closely with:

  • C*O: strategic external role, architectural guidelines
  • Tech Lead & Dev Team: shared responsibility for deployments, operability and troubleshooting
  • Product Owner and Project Management: planning maintenance windows, capacity and infrastructure initiatives

You work in a structured and forward-looking way: you spot risks before they turn into incidents, make clear decisions and document them so others can follow.

What you do

  • You evolve our Ansible collections and automate what is still done by hand today.
  • You operate, harden and update servers and infrastructure services and ensure reliable, tested backups.
  • You extend monitoring, logging and alerting so we see problems early and understand them quickly.
  • You shape CI/CD with the dev team and deploy our applications – including database migrations and clean rollbacks.
  • You debug applications in production: from logs, metrics and Sentry through containers, databases and queues down into the Python code, including performance issues.
  • Together with the dev team, you make sure applications are built to be operable: meaningful logging, health checks and clear configuration.
  • You take ownership during incidents, derive lasting improvements and keep an eye on security and compliance – a key topic in the payment space.
  • You contribute to the Kubernetes evaluation and assess whether and how it fits our platform.
  • You document infrastructure and processes and empower colleagues to work with them confidently.

What you bring to the table

Requirements

  • Several years of experience administering Linux systems (Debian/Ubuntu) in production, including networking, firewalls and system hardening.
  • Solid experience with Ansible, Docker, Docker Compose and reverse proxies.
  • Experience operating relational databases (MariaDB/MySQL) as well as with Git, merge requests and CI/CD.
  • Solid Python skills: you can read and understand our Flask code and trace errors to their root cause.
  • Experience debugging web applications in production: HTTP, REST APIs, SQL, workers and message queues.
  • Diligence, a sense of responsibility, a calm head when things are on fire, and clarity in communication and documentation.
  • No fear of subject-matter questions from non-technical colleagues – e.g. from support, project management or partners: you listen, ask the right questions and translate their concerns into technical requirements, targeted troubleshooting and concrete next steps.
  • Very good English (working language), German at least B2.
  • Willingness to work in a hybrid setup (based in the Ruhr area or Berlin) and to travel within Germany (travel expenses will be covered).

Nice to have

  • Experience with your own Ansible roles and collections, nftables and VPN technologies (WireGuard, OpenVPN, IPSec).
  • Experience with observability stacks (Prometheus, Grafana, Loki, Sentry) and GitLab CI/CD.
  • Experience with PostgreSQL, Redis or RabbitMQ as well as Flask and / or Celery.
  • Experience with Kubernetes or other container orchestration.
  • An interest in, or perhaps even experience with, e-mobility, charging infrastructure or payment.

What you can expect

  • A diverse, learning team that combines technology and purpose, with colleagues who take responsibility seriously.
  • A well-structured Ansible landscape that you can shape significantly.
  • Real ownership of our own infrastructure instead of click-ops in the cloud.
  • Insight into the entire chain from application to server – and the chance to help set the course, e.g. on a possible Kubernetes adoption.
  • Creative freedom in a company undergoing professionalization.
  • Fair remuneration (55k – 75k € / year)
  • Modern work equipment and exchange on equal terms.
  • Work with and on open data and open source, freedom in terms of tools and OS.

Sound like you?

Send us your CV – a cover letter is optional.

Open source repositories (e.g. Ansible roles or dotfiles) are welcome, but not a requirement.

You don’t tick every nice-to-have box, but feel like this is the right fit for you?

Apply anyway – what matters most is your attitude and desire to grow together.

We are a diverse team and welcome applications from people from underrepresented groups.
